At my breaking point, I realized that giving up was not an option, and waiting for opportunities wasn't enough. I had to take control, seek out the possibilities, and create my own path forward, which made all the difference in my life.
On a day in 2010 I was working at the deli, feeling lower than I ever had. My real estate career had been slow despite years of hard work. At that point, I was seriously considering giving up on my dream. The deli job helped pay the bills while I tried to build my real estate business, but I was stuck—emotionally and financially.
I went home that day, laid on the couch, and felt the weight of it all—years of trying to make real estate a sustainable full-time job. As I lay there, feeling sorry for myself, a voice in my head interrupted: “Quit feeling sorry for yourself and get up and do something about it!” As strange as it sounds, I knew exactly what I needed to do.
Before getting my license in 2005, I went through many different jobs. The truth is, I work great with people, but I don’t work well for other people. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset, driven by my own values for how I want to treat people, which is what drew me to real estate. My wife Laurie, who I often call "Saint Laurie," for her patience, stood by me through it all. As I worked to establish my career, I picked up a job at the deli—the owners were supportive of my real estate career and gave me the flexibility I needed.
On that fateful day in 2010, after feeling at my lowest, I was suddenly struck with exactly where I needed to go and who I needed to talk to. I went straight to Doug Howell, a friend who ran a brokerage. When I walked in, Doug said, “Please, God, tell me you’re here for a job.” His lead agent had quit the day before, and he needed someone immediately. It was like everything was finally lining up.
That moment turned everything around for me. I started getting busier with real estate, thanks to a steady stream of inbound calls. My business grew, and I learned to break down tasks into manageable pieces, which made the workload easier to handle and my service to clients even better.
With the right momentum, I was able to build many great relationships with my clients. The key to my success is simple: I never treat people like numbers. I focus on the details and learn who they are as people to make sure they know I care about them beyond just the real estate transaction. I stay in touch and continue developing the relationship, turning many clients into lifelong friends. I’ve been able to make real estate my full-time career, and while it may be cliché, it is true what people say: when you love what you do, you don’t work a day in your life.
I’ve learned that there is nothing you can’t achieve if you are willing to create opportunities out of challenges. I know because I’ve done it myself by accomplishing some of the hardest things most people ever do: I quit smoking cigarettes in 2003, quit drinking in 2022, and lost over 50 pounds since then. It’s not easy, but I believe with focus and determination, you can overcome anything!
Outside of work, I’ve come to appreciate quiet country living, spending much of my time enjoying our gazebo with my wife and our English black lab, Walter. He’s my best friend and even has a following on social media, with his weekly "Walter Wednesday" updates that people love. I also start most mornings at a small, mom-and-pop diner with a great group of friends. It’s these simple joys that remind me what really matters in life. I’ve learned that success isn’t just about business; it’s about finding balance and surrounding yourself with great people.
Having found my own slice of heaven in the countryside, I enjoy specializing in rural properties and helping buyers upgrade to their dream homes. I believe in building strong, lasting relationships with my clients that go beyond the transaction. For years, I’ve hosted annual client parties on my property, complete with live music, good food, and great company. These gatherings have grown over the years, with anywhere from 50 to 150 attendees, and have become more than just a social event—they’re a chance to give back. Through these events, I’ve gotten involved in supporting causes close to my heart, particularly the Wounded Warrior Project, inspired by a dear friend and client, Michael, who has benefited from their services.
When working with me, you can expect a direct and highly efficient approach. I don’t waste time; when I’m working on a deal, I’m all in. I’ve earned a reputation for being a "bulldog" because I tackle tasks quickly, fiercely, and efficiently. I’m supported by a team of highly experienced professionals, and together, we ensure that every transaction is as smooth and stress-free as possible. We have the experience to anticipate potential challenges and solve them before they become problems, making for a smooth, enjoyable experience!
Sincerely,
Tim Kister
